The Genesee Community College baseball team traveled to Cocoa Beach, Florida to compete in the Cocoa Expo last week and returned with an overall record of 8-1. The team is a perfect 7-0 versus NJCAA schools and also went 2-1 against club teams. The Cougars only setbacks were a 2-1 loss to Miami-Hamilton (Ohio), who is a member of the Ohio Regional Campus Conference, and a 6-3 loss to a club team, the Baseball Academy of Canada.
On the trip Genesee knocked off a Division I power, Hagerstown Community College, 8-5. The team also defeated three Division II teams: Lakeland CC (4-3), County College of Morris (4-3) and Oakton CC (8-2). Oakton had a 20-1 overall record coming into the game against GCC. The Cougars won three games against Division III opponents including two teams who were ranked in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll. They defeated 6th ranked Massasoit CC (7-0) and 13th ranked Nassau CC (10-7) as well as Northland CC (12-1). Their other victories were over the Ontario Blue Jays "A" team (13-6), Ontario Blue Jays "B" team (8-2) and Miami-Middletown (7-3).
Ryan Gugel led the team in hitting for the week. He had 14 hits in 33 at bats (.424 average). He had four double, two triples, scored 13 runs and had 10 runs batted in. Three other players also hit over .400 for the week. Chris Wager batted .471, Josh Parkinson was .444 and Brad Kozak hit .400. Kozak had five runs batted in against Hagerstown.
On the mound, Justin Bye, Craig Gillet (1.09 earned run average) and Paul Osborne each picked up two wins for the Cougars. Yimy Rodriguez (.55 ERA) earned three saves while Gillet and Andrew Vant'Wout had two each.
Genesee begins regional play on Thursday, March 30th with a doubleheader at Broome Community College. Their first home game will be with Division II rival Monroe Community College on Thursday, April 6th at 1:00 pm.
