The Genesee Community College women's basketball team suffered a heart-breaking 64-57 loss in overtime in the championship game of the Region III/District C championship game against Mercyhurst Northeast. The Lady Cougars had a four point lead but failed to convert the front end of three one and one's in the final minute of regulation. Mercyhurst hit the first two shots in overtime and the Lady Cougars were forced to foul. Mercyhurst converted 13 of 20 attempts from the free throw line in overtime to secure the upset.
Stephanie Darden finished the game with 11 points and seven assists. Priscilla Ramirez had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Dyani Johnson added 10 points and seven boards for GCC.
The Lady Cougars reached the final by defeating Alfred State, 55-49. Lizzie Roth had a career high 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Genesee. Monica Dean chipped in with 10 points.
The Lady Cougars finish their season with a 26-4 record overall. Darden and Danielle Ayala each received first team All-Region honors for GCC. Ramirez and Johnson were selected to the second team and Dean was named to the third team. Darden and Ramirez were honored with first team All-District recognition while Roth was named to the second team. Head Coach Scott Hemer was named the Region III Coach of the Year for the third time in his five years here at GCC.
