The Genesee Community College women's basketball completed its regular season with two more victories this week. GCC defeated Mercyhurst NE 76-71 and Jamestown Community College 57-39.That pushed the Lady Cougars victory total to a perfect 21-0 against NJCAA Division II competition and 12-0 within Region III.
Genesee was pushed to the limits in its overtime win against Mercyhurst Northeast. The team went cold from the perimeter in the second half after shooting 57% from the floor in the first and fell behind by one with nine seconds remaining. Freshmen Priscilla Ramirez (Brooklyn) got a steal, drove to the basket and was fouled. She connected on one of her two attempts and managed to secure the offensive board but the final shot fell short as time expired. The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Saints 8-3 in overtime. Ramirez scored a team high 18 points. Danielle Ayala had 14 points, Lizzie Roth and Monica Dean scored 12 each and Dyani Johnson posted a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
In its final regular season game, Genesee fell behind by as many as six points in the first half before taking a 28-25 advantage into the locker room against Jamestown. But the Lady Cougars dominated the second half only giving up 14 points in the stanza. Johnson hit six out of her ten attempts from the floor to lead the team with 14 points. Ramirez added 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for GCC. Ayala chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
The 5th-ranked Lady Cougars finished the regular season with an overall record of 25-3. They will face the winner of Alfred State and Erie in a semi-final game of the District C/Region III tournament at Jamestown Community College on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The winner advances to the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
