The Genesee Community College men's basketball team dropped its final two regional games this week against Mercyhurst Northeast and Jamestown. The team finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-10 and 8-6 in the WNYAC/Region III play. With the two losses, the Cougars become #4 seed in the Region III tournament to be held at Monroe Community College. The team opens with Erie Community College on Friday night at 6:00 pm. The winner of that game will face Monroe Community College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
The Cougars only trailed Mercyhurst by three at the break. But, rebounding was the difference in the team's 97-82 loss. The Saints held a 60-30 advantage on the glass including a 28-12 edge on the offensive boards. Don Juan Tyson scored 29 points while connecting on 10 out of 11 attempts from the charity stripe. Jamayal Johnson and Gari Fields added 16 points each and Antonio Mullins netted 10 for GCC.
The Cougars dropped a tough one-point loss at Jamestown (68-67). GCC had a two point lead with 12.3 seconds to go when a JCC player hit a three point shot. Genesee came right back when Johnson hit a lay-up with 7.5 seconds remaining to regain the lead. But it was short-lived as Jamestown hit a jump shot with 1.7 seconds to go to win the game. Antonio Mullins scored 30 points to lead the Cougars and Fields chipped in with 11 points.
