Even a cancelled flight and lost luggage couldn't beat the women's basketball team. The Lady Cougars traveled to the Illinois Central Holiday tournament which featured six teams ranked in the NJCAA Division II poll. Though the team was unable to play its first round match up with Kankakee and forced to drop into the consolation bracket, GCC came away with two more wins for the year.
Genesee defeated 8th ranked Redlands Community College in a 59-56 come from behind win. The Lady Cougars trailed by as many as eight points in the second half before making its final surge. Freshman Danielle Ayala knotted the game at 54 with a long three point goal with one second remaining on the shot clock. Freshman Dyani Johnson then hit the game winning three one minute later. Johnson led GCC with 13 points and seven boards. Ayala added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The team dominated its rematch against Wayne CCCD, 67-44. The Lady Cougar defense was suffocating as it held Wayne to 18 first-half points and its lowest scoring output of the year. Genesee shot well from the floor as it connected on 50% of its shots including 46% of its shots from 3-point range. Freshman Judishea Spence led a trio of double figure scorers with 11 points. Johnson (nine rebounds) and Ayala chipped in with 10 points each. Priscilla Ramirez was the leading rebounder with 11 caroms to go with her nine points and four assists.
The Lady Cougars are now 12-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The team will be heading to Florida this week to play against three NJCAA Division I opponents.
