The Genesee Community College women's basketball team ran its record to a perfect 10-0 to close out the first semester with three victories including claiming its first Great North championship. The team traveled to Kirtland Community College in Roscommon, Michigan to have a rematch with Lakeland Community College in the first round on Friday night. GCC overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and held on to win 61-60. The Lady Cougars were led by sophomores Stephanie Darden (Boston, MA) and Latoya Anderson (Rochester). Darden scored 18 points including 15 in the second half. Anderson added 17 points (7-8 FT's) and 10 boards. Freshman Danielle Ayala (Middletown) chipped in with 10 points.
In the championship game, Genesee dominated its host, Kirtland, in the second half. The team turned a one-point lead into a 76-58 rout as the Lady Cougars tallied 45 points in the stanza. Ten out of eleven players contributed in the scoring column for GCC led by Priscilla Ramirez's (Brooklyn) 14 points. Ayala added 13 points and Tracy Wangelin (Olean) poured in 10 points.
On Tuesday, the team ran its conference record to 3-0 with a dominating performance against Erie Community College. Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Cougars in their 80-32 pounding of the Lady Kats. Anderson recorded a double-double with a 17 point-11 rebound performance. Lizzie Roth (Buffalo) connected on all three of her three-point attempts en route to 13 points. Wangelin (6 boards) and Ramirez (4 assists, 4 steals) each added 10 points a piece for Genesee.
The Lady Cougars are still ranked #2 in the NJCAA Division II poll. The team in heading out to East Peoria, Illinois for the Central Illinois tournament which is being held on December 28th-30th. The team's first round opponent is 11th ranked Kankakee Community College.
