The GCC women's basketball team began its quest for a Region III title with two victories this week. Genesee overcame a sluggish performance on Thursday night to top Alfred State, 77-58. Danielle Ayala scored a season high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Latoya Anderson (Rochester) had 21 points, nine boards and five assists. Priscilla Ramirez chipped in with 11 points, eight caroms and five assists.
On Sunday afternoon, GCC sprinted out to a 22-0 lead in the first six minutes and coasted to a 93-30 win over JCC-Olean. Each Lady Cougar scored led by Tracy Wangelin's 19 points. Also scoring in double figures for Genesee were Ayala (14), Ramirez (11), Anderson (10) and Monica Dean (10). Ramirez (5 assists) and Dean secured eight boards each.
The team host's Erie Community College on Tuesday. Following that game, the Lady Cougars take to the road for its next ten games. They will compete at tournaments in Michigan and Illinois plus a 3-game trip against Division I schools in Florida. GCC returns home on Thursday, January 19th. The Lady Cougars are still ranked 2nd in the NJCAA Division II National poll and they are the top ranked defensive team in the country, yielding only 48.6 points per game.
