The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team won six matches at the Hagerstown tournament before falling in the finals to the host school. The Lady Cougars went 4-0 in pool play defeating Allegheny (30-17, 30-16), the Community College of Rhode Island (19-30, 30-17, 15-9), Catonsville (30-17, 30-21) and Howard (30-18, 30-26). In the quarterfinals, GCC again beat Allegheny in straight sets, 30-20 and 30-15. The team then downed Howard for the second time 30-22 and 30-17. That win earned the Lady Cougars the right to face 20th ranked Hagerstown in the finals. It was a hotly contested match. The Lady Hawks took the first game 28-30 and then the Lady Cougars bounced back to win the second set, 30-24. But the Lady Hawks prevailed in the tiebreaker, 11-15.
Alyssa Fitchette and Jen Martins earned all-tournament recognition for Genesee. Fitchette had 46 blocks, 34 kills, and 23 digs in the tournament. Martins set for 171 assists, had 20 blocks and 30 digs. Lauren Spiotta added 46 kills and 40 blocks
On Tuesday, the Lady Cougars won their tri-match in Jamestown. GCC beat Jamestown in three straight sets, 30-25, 30-15, and 30-25. In its other game, the team defeated Erie CC, 30-26 and 30-22. Freshmen had the spotlight as Spiotta (16 kills and 6 blocks) and Fitchette (13 kills, 9 aces and 7 blocks) led the way for Genesee. Danielle Berryman (17 kills), Jill McAndrew (23 digs) and Martins (41 assists) also contributed. The Lady Cougars are now 36-7 overall. With a victory over Monroe and Alfred on Tuesday, the team will have clinched its eighth consecutive WNYAC championship.
