The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team lost its first matches of the season but it did manage to beat the defending National Champs, St. Clair County Community College at the Mott Community College tournament in Flint, Michigan. In its first match, the Lady Cougars lost a tough three game set to Vincennes (Indiana) 26-30, 30-20, and 3-15. GCC then fell to Grand Rapids (Michigan) in straight sets 28-30 and 26-30. GCC bounced back in its final match on Friday to defeat its host, Mott, 22-30, 30-26, and 15-9. On Saturday, the team opened with its victory over St. Clair (Michigan) 30-25, 27-30 and 16-14. That propelled the Lady Cougars into the quarterfinals where they faced Kellogg Community College (Michigan), who finished fourth at last year's national championships. GCC battled but lost in straight sets, 30-21 and 30-28. Lauren Spiotta led the team with 18 blocks to go along with 27 kills. Alyssa Fitchette had 33 kills and 13 blocks. Jamie Huglemaier led the team with 147 assists on the weekend.
On Thursday, the Lady Cougars earned their first conference win of the season by pounding Niagara CCC 30-11, 30-12, and 30-14. Danielle Berryman led the team with 11 kills. Spiotta added six kills, five aces, and three blocks. Huglemaier had 19 assists and Jen Martin added 11 to go along with her 10 aces. Genesee is now 11-3 overall and 1-0 in Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) play. The team will host its first tri-match of the year on Tuesday as it will face Mercyhurst Northeast at 5:00 pm and Niagara County Community College at 8:00 pm.
