The Genesee Community College Lady Cougar Softball team finished its best season since 1999 by winning ten out of its last fourteen games. Even more impressive was the fact that the team played their final ten games in six days. GCC finished with an overall record of 15-13 and 14-12 in Region III, Division III play. It's only the 6th time in the 13-year history of the program that the team finished with a winning record.
Genesee took two from Erie CC on Monday. The first game was a completion of a game called on account of darkness. GCC won 12-10. In the second game, the team won 10-3. Ashley Smith was the winning pitcher in that game and went 6-8 on the day with a fence-clearing homerun.
The team managed a split on Tuesday with Niagara CCC. GCC lost game one, 2-10 and took game two, 3-1.On Wednesday, Genesee took both ends of the twin bill against Onondaga, 5-3 and 3-2. On Thursday, GCC lost to Jamestown CC. Game one was close until the fourth when JCC bats got hot. Jamestown won 8-3 and 9-0 in the second game.
Genesee took two from Finger Lakes on Saturday behind two sterling pitching performances from its freshmen aces. GCC took the first game, 9-0, as Nikki Torcello threw a one-hitter. In game two, Ashley Smith had her turn to dominate with another one-hitter as GCC pounded FLCC, 8-0.
