Danielle McCray, a member of the women's basketball team, and Tracy Obonna, a member of the women's volleyball team, each signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their playing careers at NCAA Division I schools on Friday. McCray is headed to Marist College and Obonna is going to Youngstown State University. They are the second and third athlete from GCC this year to sign with a Division I school. They join men's basketball player Bart Tooms, who signed with UNC-Greensboro in the fall.
McCray will be joining former Lady Cougar teammate Fifi Camara at Marist, which is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Marist, located in Poughkeepsie, New York, won the regular season title but lost in the finals of the MAAC championships and missed out on its second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. She is the fourth female basketball player from GCC in the last three years to sign with a Division I program.
Obonna will be joining an experienced team at Youngstown State which is a part of the Horizon League. The 2004 squad at Youngstown State, which is located in Youngstown, Ohio, only had two seniors on its roster. The team entered its play-offs as the #8 seed and managed a first round upset of the 5th seeded team before falling in the quarterfinals to the 4th seed, Cleveland State.
