The Genesee Community College men's basketball team pulled off an upset of Mercyhurst NE, the 3rd seed in the Region III Men's Basketball play-offs held at Monroe last weekend. The Cougars won 57-51. Genesee entered the tournament as the 6th seed. The Cougars slowed the game down in the first half to take the deeper Saints out of their rhythm but managed just a one point lead at the half.
The Saints came out firing in the second half and managed to take a 12-point lead but the Cougars battled back. GCC connected on 49% of its field goal attempts while MNE could only hit 19 of their 48 attempts. Phil Santiago led GCC with 17 points, four assists and four steals. A.J. White tallied 17 for the Cougars.
Genesee couldn't match Erie's firepower in the semi-final game. Erie used a full court press to push the tempo and won 109-88. Santiago and Reggie Holmes each scored 24 points for the Cougars who finish the season with an 11-21 record overall.
