The Genesee Community College Women's Basketball team placed second in the District C tournament held at GCC over the weekend. The Lady Cougars lost to Monroe in the championship game, 66-46.
In the semi-final game, the Lady Cougars overcame a sluggish first half to beat Jamestown Community College, 59-43. The team took only a five point lead into halftime, but got its offensive game going as Antionetta Young scored 23 points for GCC. Stephanie Darden chipped in with 12 points and eight assists. Defense was the key as the Lady Cougars held the Lady Jayhawks to 25% shooting from the field. Danielle McCray pulled down 14 rebounds and Shakeema Savage and Latoya Anderson garnered 10 boards each.
In the championship game, the Lady Cougars used tough man to man defense to hold Monroe to its third lowest output of the year, nearly 30 points below its average. The team trailed MCC by just six points with 8 Â½ minutes left, but couldn't pull of the upset of the number one ranked team in the country. Young scored 17 points and McCray gathered in 11 boards for Genesee.
Young and Darden were named to the all-tournament first team. McCray and Anderson were selected for the second team. The Lady Cougars finished the season ranked #13 in the country with an overall record of 26-6.
