Cougar Basketball Team Comes Close in Two Defeats

The Genesee Community College Men's Basketball team lost two more close games this week to Monroe CC and to Jamestown CC. The Cougars have lost four conference games this season by a total of eight points. Genesee is now 7-14 overall with a 1-5 record in WNYAC/Region III play.

On Tuesday, GCC took 10th ranked Monroe CC to overtime before falling 89-87. Monroe had built a 19 point half-time lead. Sophomore Jim Irwin hit a huge three point shot to bring the Cougars within two and freshman A.J. White hit a 12-foot jump shot to send the game into overtime. Phil Santiago had a shot at the buzzer to win the game but it rimmed out. White led the team with 24 points by hitting 11 of 14 attempts from the floor. Reggie Holmes had 18 points and 15 rebounds. Santiago added 17 points and Irwin had 15 points and 12 assists.

Against Jamestown on Thursday, both teams shot poorly as each connected on only 36% of its shots from the field. Second chance points were the difference as the Cougars gave up twenty offensive rebounds. The Cougars only managed to grab nine offensive boards. Phil Santiago had 17 points, seven rebounds, and three steals for GCC. A.J. White chipped in with 12 points. Jim Irwin had a team high five assists to go with his nine points.
