Lady Cougars Win Cincinnati State Classic

The Genesee Community College Women's Basketball team won the Cincinnati State Classic tournament over the weekend. Genesee was the only Division II school entered in the Division I Tip-off tournament. In the championship game, the Lady Cougars defeated Cincinnati State 64-54 and ended the Surge's 48-game home winning streak that dated back over the last 2 ½ years. Antionetta Young led the team with 22 points and eight rebounds and was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player. All-tournament selection Danielle McCray chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Latoya Anderson added 10 points and seven rebounds.

In the first game, Genesee defeated Kennedy-King College of Chicago 78-39. Young again had the hot hand for GCC as she scored 31 points on 12-15 shooting including 5 of 8 from three-point range. McCray had 13 points and 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double. Shakeema Savage added 10 points and seven boards.

Young, a sophomore from Bessemer, Alabama, was selected the Region III Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the tournament. She is currently ranked 2nd in the Region in scoring at 18.3 points per game and 3rd in three-point shooting. Young is shooting 43.8% from long distance.
