The Genesee Community College United Way employee campaign raised $13,478 from 135 College faculty and staff during a two-week period of United Way days in March 2006. Barbara Shine of Batavia, Instructor of Business and Chair of the Genesee Community College/United Way Committee said, "I am extremely pleased and appreciative to all, namely, faculty, staff, administrators and students who participated in and supported the Genesee Country United Way." She added that as Genesee Community College is such an integral part of the community, it is gratifying to see us supporting agencies that fulfill vital needs in our community.
Through a series of presentations at departmental meetings, each College faculty and staff learned about a wide array of local service agencies-many of which serve the College's students and employees. A United Way video, edited by student Jeffery Sadden with assistance from the College's Media Services, highlighted the organization's many essential services provided to Genesee County residents. United Way representatives along with agency personnel supported by the United Way were present at the meetings.
Ms. Shine added, "Student involvement in our United Way campaign planning and events programming increased total college awareness resulting in a marked increase in this year's campaign donations. Students led a "Pep Rally" as an awareness activity that helped increase the visibility of the 2006 Campaign throughout the campus. Service learning is an important part of our curriculum."
