Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the Grand Opening ceremony of its new Wolcott J. Humphrey III Student Union on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at 1:15 PM in the Game Room area of the new 10,500 square foot facility. The event is free and open to the public, and no reservations are necessary.
Beginning at 1:15 PM, several key figures will make a few brief remarks about the project. These include President Stuart Steiner; Anne Garlock, chairman of the Board of Trustees; John C. Dwyer, chairman of the "Build a Legacy" fundraising campaign; as well as several students who serve on Genesee's Student Government Association.
The new Student Union is named after Wolcott J. (Jay) Humphrey III, who was a strong advocate for the College and was serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees when he died unexpectedly in 2001. Mr. Humphrey was president of the former Pavilion State Bank, and was one of the most visible and active civic leaders in the Genesee-Livingston-Orleans-Wyoming region.
The new Student Union has been completed on time and within the projected budget of approximately $1.8 million. The facility adjoins the northeast section of the existing Batavia Campus complex and features large windows revealing the scenic view of the rural countryside. While College Village, Genesee's student housing complex, is within view of the new Student Union, both residential and commuting students will enjoy the new space for social events and exchanges, mixers and gatherings that occur outside the classroom. The space will enhance the ongoing development of the College's growing student leadership programs, as well as providing space for clubs and organizations to work on their service projects at different times of the week. The new Student Union also provides space for large group activities such as lectures, exhibits, and global education demonstrations, and a game room, the Student Government Center, and a small café.
