For efforts above the call of duty and an ongoing commitment to Genesee Community College, Maggie Scinta, administrative assistant to the director of The BEST Center at has been chosen Employee of the Month for October. She is being honored along with Christina East, who was named Student of the Month for her contributions to the Student Survival and Bloggers clubs of the College-which are helping students adjust to the academic atmosphere.
Employee of the Month: Maggie ScintaThrough all the changes that come with a 23-year career, Maggie Scinta has been an unwavering, trusted member of the Genesee Community College workforce, according to Genesee Community College President Stuart Steiner.
"During Maggie's many years with the college, she has seen several transition periods beginning when her division was known as Community Services. She has met all of the organizational changes, challenges and needs with a steady commitment to exceptional service," Steiner said.
Scinta, a Batavian, and East, a resident of Clarendon, will receive a plaque and certificate at a lunch with Steiner on Oct. 25. They also have the use of a special parking spot near the Stuart Steiner Theatre for the month.
Steiner recognized Scinta's willingness to go above and beyond her job description. "In addition to her normal workload, which includes coordinating services to BEST Center customers and maintaining positive relationships with other staff members, Maggie takes on other assignments such as special projects, teamwork, and the PA Electronic Workflow committee," Steiner said. "Maggie is a joy to work with because of the consistent, quiet way she takes care of business."
Among other duties, Scinta helps set up driving education programs, real estate classes, and assists with class registrations. She and her husband, Robert, have a son, Robert Jr., who works for the Department of Justice in Virginia.
"I really enjoy my job; I love working here," said Scinta, who holds an associate's degree in accounting. "I was quite happy (when I found out I was named Employee of the Month)."
Student of the Month: Christina East Christina East has distinguished herself as a leader in the College's student community, Steiner said."Christina is a conscientious 'doer' with a strong motivation for getting things done," the president said. "She works diligently and approaches each endeavor with enthusiasm and a vigor that helps to motivate her peers."
East, 19, a sophomore accounting major, was instrumental in the formation of the Student Survivors Club and now is serving as the club's president.
"We formed this group last year in an effort to help incoming freshmen make a smooth transition to college," East said. "A lot of them don't know what to do. We want to prevent students from dropping out, so we have put together a survival guide."
The guide gives practical advice for students, East said, such as how to manage time and money. Initially, it was going to be a publication but, thanks to the formation of the Bloggers Club, it since has evolved into an electronic guide. "We've moved into the 21st century," East quipped.
The guide can be found at http://www.studentsurvival.blogspot.com.
East is a 2004 graduate of Holley Central School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and was co-editor of the school yearbook. A daughter of Daniel and Susan Vickers, she is the youngest of seven children. She works part-time at Radio Shack in Batavia.
