The Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers, a trio of dynamic women tap dancers, will perform with the David Leonhardt Jazz Group on Friday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Genesee Center for the Arts in the Stuart Steiner Theatre of Genesee Community College. The ensemble consistently draws rave reviews for their lightening-speed footwork, rapid-fire taps, and entertaining improvisations.
Shelley Oliver has over 20 years experience as a professional tap dancer and has appeared internationally with such notable tap legends as Savion Glover, Jimmy Slide, Buster Brown, and Chuck Green. She has toured extensively throughout Europe, China, the Caribbean, Canada and the United States. Television appearances include Tap Dance in America with Gregory Hines and Star Search, in which she was a finalist. Ms. Oliver also teaches jazz-tap at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania and is director of the Muhlenberg Jazz Tap Ensemble.
True to the traditions of both jazz music and jazz tap dancing, the performances include dynamic improvisational elements, synchronized ensemble dancing, and stunning solo work. Each dancer in the ensemble is a strong soloist skilled in tap improvisation. Sally Somer from the Village Voice calls Ms. Oliver and company, "warm, frank, and flirtatious." They'll be appearing with the David Leonhardt Jazz Group whose all star group has appeared at The Apollo Theater, The Blue Note, Birdland, and Sweet Basil. The Source 's Andrzej Pilarczyk, notes that the Oliver-Leonhardt team "delights onlookers with their joyous tapping, shuffling, and jumping and matches the intensity of the Leonhardt Trio's playing."
Patricia Hawley, Audience Services Manager at the Genesee Center for the Arts has seen an increase in the popularity of dance events. "We've definitely seen an increase in attendance and overall enthusiasm for all of our dance programs," she said. "This show is being co-sponsored by Robin Cotler's Images in Dance so we're thrilled that we can make that community connection."
The Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers will also give a workshop at Images in Dance on Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m.
