The Batavia-based Jerome Foundation has established a new scholarship - The Jerome Foundation Health Care Scholarship - at Genesee Community College to encourage area residents to pursue health care careers, Genesee Community College Foundation President Norbert J. Fuest announced today.Area residents interested in pursuing careers in the Nursing, Respiratory Care, Occupational Therapy Assistant, or Physical Therapist Assistant fields may apply for the scholarship, which can provide funding for partial or full tuition. The College hopes to make the first awards this summer for the 2004-2005 academic year, Mr. Fuest said.
Area residents interested in applying may do so by visiting the Financial Aid office online (www.genesee.edu) or by picking up application forms at the Batavia Campus' Financial Aid office or any of the College's five campus centers. The Jerome Foundation and the Genesee Community College Foundation worked together to create the scholarship to help address the growing shortage of qualified health care professionals throughout the region, Mr. Fuest said. "Many hospitals are already reporting shortages of health care professionals, and the statistics suggest that the shortage will grow deeper over the next five years," he said. "The new scholarship will encourage worthy candidates to come forward and begin preparation for health care careers. Just as important, the scholarship will help call attention to the growing need for dedicated health care workers and the tremendous rewards these careers offer." The College is deeply grateful for the support of the Jerome Foundation, Mr. Fuest added. The Jerome Foundation is the successor to the former St. Jerome Hospital Foundation. This foundation provides funding for critical health care needs in the region in the tradition of St. Jerome Hospital and the Sisters of Mercy.
Among its many initiatives, the Genesee Community College Foundation provides a variety of scholarships to Genesee students. Scholarships help attract talented students to Genesee, alleviate short-term financial emergencies faced by students, and promote study in fields critical to the well-being of the region. Last year, the Genesee Community College Foundation funded 512 scholarships totaling $234,567.
