Genesee Community College Honors 60 Nursing Graduates

Sixty graduating nursing students were honored at Genesee Community College's annual Nursing Recognition ceremony last Friday, May 19th, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. The event occured at the Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium at the Batavia Campus before 700 guests.

Under the leadership of the Genesee Community College's new nursing director, Ms. Kathleen Hankel, the nursing program has been reviewed and revised to prepare the graduate to succeed in today's challenging and constantly changing health care environment. The Program as well as the Recognition Ceremony is in a state of transition. Graduates will continue to receive the GCC Nursing program pin and first year students will receive the traditional GCC nurses cap this year. "Although this is my first Recognition ceremony at Genesee Community College, I have participated in more than 25 graduation and recognition events throughout my career." Hankel said. "It is always very exciting and rewarding to see the new graduates entering the field and embracing their profession."

Several graduates received special awards and recognition for their accomplishments in the program over the last year:

•The Award of General Excellence, bestowed on a graduate who demonstrates exemplary performance in academic work and clinical practice, will be presented to Jill Christiano of Batavia.•The Award for Clinical Nursing Proficiency, presented to a graduating nurse who excels in patient care, will be awarded to Jodi Kitt of Perry.•The Nursing Leadership Award is presented to a graduate (s) in recognition of outstanding leadership and professionalism. Cheryl Van Ornum and Lisa Salvador both of Batavia are this year's recipients.•The Jayne Miner Scholarship will be received by Dorine Hawes of Akron. As in years past, the majority of Genesee's graduates from the Class of 2006 will be working in Western New York health care facilities, according to Hankel. Many have already accepted positions and will begin their employment immediately after graduation.

Including the Class of 2006, exactly 1,549 students have graduated from Genesee's Nursing program since the first class of 15 nurses graduated in 1971. Genesee Community College is graduating its 35th nursing class this year with the following graduates (with their home towns indicated):
