A new articulation agreement between Genesee Community College and Jamestown Community College will enable Genesee students to earn an Associate in Applied Science-Professional Piloting degree from Jamestown Community College. A formal signing ceremony for the Piloting Program Articulation Agreement occurred April 5, 2004 at Genesee Community College. Presidents of both colleges, Dr. Stuart Steiner of Genesee Community College, and Dr. Gregory T. DeCinque of Jamestown Community College (JCC), as well as other interested parties attended the luncheon ceremony.
The articulation agreement guarantees that students who have successfully completed an approved list of general education core requirements at Genesee will have all of those credit hours transferred to JCC where they can earn the 31 credit hours of aviation-related course work. Students enroll in the aviation courses through JCC, and have the option of doing their ground school and flight training at one of three area aviation centers, specifically Bill Law Aviation in Rochester, Prior Aviation in Buffalo, or Ravenaire in Batavia.
JCC's A.A.S.-Professional Piloting degree, approved in 2000 by the State University of New York and the State Education Department, is designed to prepare students to work toward becoming a pilot with options of flying for major or regional airlines, charter businesses, freight, or private individuals or companies. Students complete approximately 250 flight hours and will hold a private pilot license, instrument rating, commercial pilot airplane single-engine land certificate, and certified flight instructor-airplane rating. Students also have the option of earning the multi-engine land and certified flight instructor-instrument ratings.
Jared Adams, of Falconer, NY and the first graduate of JCC's Commercial Piloting program, has already accumulated 1200 flight hours with 135-multi-engine hours. He has been a flight instructor at Dunkirk, NY Aviation and Peachtree Flight Center near Atlanta, Georgia. He expects to earn his Bachelor's degree at Georgia State University in December 2004.
