John C. Dwyer of Batavia, General Chair of the Genesee Community College Foundation's annual campaign, Our Best Investment, recently named Thomas R. Turnbull of Batavia, publisher of The Daily News as Chair of the Genesee Division. Mr. Turnbull in accepting the role stated, "We all have a vested interest in making this campaign a success. A stronger Genesee Community College makes Genesee County a better place to live and work for all of us. I've pulled together talented team leaders who share in the responsibility to attract and retain students and who will in turn involve other community members in the campaign." The campaign leaders include:
•Dean Norton of Batavia - CPA, Freed Maxick and Battaglia; President, Genesee County Farm Bureau Board
•Frank Ferrando of Batavia - Interim Executive Director, Genesee County Chamber of Commerce
•Andrea Aldinger of Attica - Genesee County Business / Education Alliance, Coordinator
•Gerald Condello of Batavia - Batavia businessman
•J. Peter Garlock of Batavia - Sales Representative, Xerox
•Jodie Freese of Batavia - Finance Specialist, UMMC; Community Development VP for Batavia Area Jaycees
•Peggy Marone of Batavia - Coordinator, Leadership Genesee
"Genesee has a $58 million impact on our local economy," said Mr. Turnbull. "And that tremendous impact alone is justification for encouraging students to attend Genesee as a high school student to obtain college credit, as a potential transfer student to a four year college, or in a degree or certificate program or to obtain career training. As community members we encourage enrollment at Genesee through our involvement in the College and through our financial support of the Foundation's programs."
The theme, Our Best Investment, reflects the desire to support excellence in the classroom through scholarship incentives to students with the potential for high academic achievement. The Board wishes to make higher education available to all area residents who are capable regardless of their ability to pay. The campaign also supports local business and industry and the local workforce. The economic vitality that the College brings to our region is tremendous as tomorrow's leaders are trained and our local workforce is strengthened through career and certificate programs such as nursing, respiratory care, physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy assistant, human services, business, criminal justice, marketing and retail. The College enrollment this year is over 5,800 full and part time students. The overall goal of the campaign is $252,000. To date the campaign has over $157,000 in gifts and pledges.
The Genesee Community College Foundation was formed in the mid-eighties as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing service to and support of the College. Its thirty-member board of directors is comprised of business and civic leaders, and last year, the Foundation's philanthropic support provided 512 scholarships to Genesee students totaling $234,567.
