Genesee's Men's Basketball Team Become District II Champions

Genesee's Men's Basketball Team Wins District Championship Game Over Top-Ranked Team in the Country!

Picture of Basketball playerThe Genesee Community College men's basketball team won the District 2 championship game on their home court in front of a packed gym full of spectators and fans on March 8. The #1 ranked National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II team, the Community College of Beaver County (PA), suffered their first loss of the season to the undefeated #2 ranked Cougar team, by a score of 87-77. Genesee Community College remains the only undefeated men's junior college basketball team in the nation, at any level.

Genesee was led by sophomore guard Terry George with 22 points. Brian Jackson recorded 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Melvin Council added 17 points and Akim Neverson contributed 14 points and ten rebounds.

Picture of Basketball playerThe Cougars will now travel to Danville, Illinois to compete in the NJCAA National Tournament from March 19-22. They receive a bye in the first round and will play one game on Thursday and one on Friday. The championship game will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The Cougars overall record improves to 32-0.

Genesee Community College reached this District Championship game by defeating Monroe Community College 86-54 on March 2 at the Region III Tournament held at Alfred State, to become the Region III champions. Genesee's Terry George was named the Region III Player of the Year, Brian Jackson was also named to the First Regional Team, and both Darnell Jackson and Melvin Council were named to the Second Regional Team. Genesee's Coach Mike von Schiller was named the region III Coach of the Year.

Genesee's team and players have achieved several other major accomplishments this year:

  • They are the first team ever to go undefeated in Region III, Division II
  • Three players reached their 1000-career point milestone - Terry George, Brian Jackson and Melvin Council
  • Brian Jackson broke the school record for career assists
