Genesee Community College's men's basketball team is currently the second ranked team in the nation, according to a recent coaches poll. The Genesee Community College Cougars are in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Last month the Cougars were ranked third, but moved up in the rankings on the strength of recent victories over other top-ranked teams.
Before the holiday break last month, the Cougars won the championship trophy at the St. Clair tournament by beating what was then the #1 nationally ranked team, Owens Tech, in the first round of play, 96-92. In the championship round Genesee beat Fanshaw 107-64 to bring home the title. Genesee's Terry George was named tournament MVP. Their current overall record is 13-0.
"The experience that our returning sophomores gained winning the region and going to the nationals last year has been a big part of our success this season," said Cougars Head Coach Michael von Schiller. "It's going to be a big challenge trying to repeat-we're playing in the toughest Region in the country-but we're all looking forward to the challenge."
Last year, the Genesee men's basketball team earned championship titles for Region III Division II and District 6, and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament.
