Two games into the 2014 season, the Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team has already assured itself its most successful season in school history. In its fourth season as a program, the Cougars had tallied two total wins entering Saturday's game against Erie Community College. Riding a season-opening win against Niagara County Community College on Wednesday, GCC remained perfect on the season with a 9-7 win over ECC to improve to 2-0 overall and in Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) play.
Kaleigh Murray scored eight goals on Wednesday afternoon to help the Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team to an 11-8 season-opening win against Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) opponent Niagara County Community College.
Murray put Genesee in front 1-0 with a goal just three-minutes into the first half, but Niagara tied the game at one just five-minutes later.
The Genesee Community College women’s lacrosse team will kick off its 2014 campaign on Wednesday afternoon when the Cougars host Western New York Athletic Conference opponent Niagara County Community College for a 4 p.m. start.
Genesee is coming off of a 0-8 season a year ago and will begin its 10-game schedule on Wednesday.
Wednesday will also mark the beginning of the season for the Thunderwolves. NCCC went 2-7 in 2013 and 1-2 in WNYAC play.

Ten student-athletes from Genesee Community College were recently named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Award winners for the 2012-2013 academic year.
The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced that the Genesee Community College women’s lacrosse team has earned the 2012-2013 NJCAA Women’s Lacrosse Academic Team of the Year award.
Team accolades were earned by achieving a 3.0+ grade point average and awarded to over 500 junior college programs this year. Teams that had the highest GPA for their respective sport were designated as the 2012-2013 NJCAA (sport) Academic Team of the Year and teams that qualified with an overall team GPA above 3.0 were designated as a 2012-2013 NJCAA (sport) All-Academic Team.
Denae McGrath scored three goals for the Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night, but it was not enough as the Lady Cougars fell to visiting Niagara County Community College, 16-4 in their final regular season home game of the season.
McGrath's first goal came at the 11:08 mark of the first half to cut Niagara's lead down to 3-1. Cassandra Dembik scored four-minutes later to get GCC to within 3-2 and Genesee was able to hang around. McGrath responded to a Niagara goal with her second goal of the game to keep the Lady Cougars within one, at 4-3.
The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team dropped a road contest at Broome Community College on Wednesday night by a final score of 21-6.
Tempestt Smith and Jamie Behrns scored for GCC in the first half but the Lady Cougars trailed 9-2 at the break.
Broome extended their lead with nine goals in the first 15-minutes of the second half before Behrns scored again at the nine-minute mark.
Genesee didn't score again until less than two-minutes to play when Hikaru Kishimoto scored twice and Jordan Powell scored her first goal of the season.
The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team had to wait out a nearly 45-minute weather delay before hosting No.6 Jefferson Community College on Wednesday afternoon and fell to the visitors, 20-2.
The Lady Cannoneers opened up a 4-0 lead before Jamie Behrns scored her first goal of the year to get the Lady Cougars to within 4-1 early in the first half. Jefferson CC then scored ten straight goals before Behrns scored her second of the game to make it 14-2. The Lady Cannoneers led 17-2 at the half.
Sarah Bosa made four saves in net for GCC.
The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team fell to 0-2 on the young season after losing to Monroe Community College 26-0 on Saturday afternoon in their home opener.
MCC led 18-0 at the half and controlled possession throughout the game.
Sarah Bosa made 13 saves in net for GCC and Jordan Powell had four draw controls in the game.
The Lady Cougars will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Jefferson Community College for a 4 p.m. start.
Twenty student athletes from Genesee Community College were named to the NJCAA Region III Academic All-Region List for the 2011-2012 seasons. Students honored on the NJCAA Academic All-Region List have maintained full-time enrollment and earned a grade point average of 3.5 (roughly equivalent to an A) or better.
